Function of Glutathione Transferase in the Body

Glutathione (also called GSH) is made up of many different types of protein enzymes consisting of as many as three different amino acids.

A transferase is an enzyme which helps the transfer of a certain group to another molecule.

This activity is known to detoxify certain compounds; they do this by binding harmful toxins together.

These glutathione transferase enzymes are split into six different atomic mass unit sizes including Alpha, Pi, Mu, Theta, Zeta and Omega.

There are two different states of glutathione and these are the reduced GSH state and the oxidised (GSSG). It’s good to note however that in healthy cells over 90% of the glutathione is in the reduced GSH state where as the other 10% is in its oxidised form (GSSH).
