What are Glutathione Precursors?
Glutathione precursors, most important of which are cysteine, glutamic acid and glycine, are used by the body to manufacture glutathione.
Glutathione (otherwise known as GSH) is a water soluble compound that occurs in all the cells of every organ in the body.
These and other precursors are commonly found in these rich glutathione foods, vegetables and fruits like spinach, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, parsley, avocado, asparagus, grapefruit, strawberries , milk thistle, whey protein, etc.
Glutathione Precursors – The Indispensable Compound
The effects of glutathione is important because its antioxidant activity protects the cells from harmful effects of free radicals. Its absence, or even low level of concentration, could lead to death of the cells.
It is also associated with upkeep of immune system and is required for many other cellular functions such as detoxification, transport of amino acids, production of various co-enzymes and maintaining Vitamins C and E in reduced state thus prolonging and enhancing their effectiveness.

This wonder glutathione antioxidant is known to act against carcinogenic substances as well. Antioxidants are well documented and known to possess vital roles in health maintenance and disease prevention.
“Glutathione is your cell’s own major antioxidant. Maintaining elevated glutathione levels aids the body’s natural antioxidant function.”
Biochemical Pharmacology 47: 2113-2123 1994
It is often observed that many of the diseases like osteoporosis, glutathione and diabetes, high blood pressure and over 60 others are associated with glutathione deficiency levels.

Brain cells consume about 20 percent of the oxygen we breathe. Consequently, the potential of creating free radicals is greatest in these cells; glutathione complex plays a very important role in protecting these cells in the human brain from damage by neutralizing the free radicals.
Optimum Level of Glutathione for Good Health

- Glutathione precursors are needed to fight free radicals in your body
To remain healthy therefore, it is essential that glutathione is at optimum level in the body.
This can be easily done with proper diet and healthy and active lifestyle. Glutathione precursors production in the body begins to slow down after around 25 years of age.
Reduced glutathione levels create a condition where the body has to decide whether to use it for supporting immune system or for muscular system or for any other function.
Nature always selects that an ingredient should be first used for most vital function, hence in this instant, glutathione is first used to prop the immune system and the remaining level is used for other purposes.
Result is lesser biological activities relating to other functions such as repairs and replacement of worn out cells, etc.
This ultimately results in the affected person looking aged.
Glutathione Precursors Supplementation
Glutathione supplement are available in the market which can help raise the level of the antioxidant in the body.
One has to be careful in choosing the right type of supplement, e.g. supplement containing glutathione precursors is better than glutathione itself if it is to be taken orally. Glutathione injection as well as glutathione IV are other ways a person can increase their levels of GSH.
Ensure that the product is from a company of repute. Glutathione molecules are too large to pass through intestinal system and enter the blood stream, whereas glutathione precursors are easy to assimilate which are then used by the body to synthesize glutathione.
